First off, I was born in 79. First rap tapes I had was Run DMC and the Beastie boys in like the second or third grade. Then came LL, Salt and Pep, The Fat Boys, Slick Rick, Dana Dane, Kane, Boogie Down, NWA, Tribe, Nice and Smooth,Brand Nubian,Nas, AZ, Gangstarr, Geto Boys, Naughty, Mobb Deep, Outkast, Wu, Snoop, Pac, Big just to name a few. I got many of the episodes of Yo MTV raps from 90-95 and Rap Citys from 95-01 on dvd (transferred them from vhs) and watch them motha fuckas all the time, plus issues of the Source in damn near perfect condition from its first few years (when it was still repected) and go back and look at them from time to time as well as almost every issue of XXL, cept for a few of the recent ones, XXL kinda fell off. My point is, I aint no little nigga, and I know hip hop.
I watched hip hop grow and change all my life. One thing I remember from the very beginning is that hip hop was about the streets, not meaning simply the gangers thugs and huslers but, what was going on in the community whether it be socially, politically or simply what was popular among the younger generations as far as styles and slang. Jewlery, Fashion, dances, parties, as well as boasts about being the flyest, dopest, freashest, coolest or best have long been a mainstay in hip hop music. Hip Hop was the kids and young adults without industry connects or big budjets, recording (sometimes classic) singles and albums in their bedrooms and basements and watching them blowup.
Make no mistake, there has ALWAYS been dance tracks in hip hop, and there has ALWAYS been subpar and mediocre rappers/mc’s. Not only that MOST early MC’s made songs for parties/clubs.
Which brings us to Soulja Boy, the lil homey who made beats using fruity loops, recorded and promoted using the computer and blew up. That shit is hip hop right there. He is the epitome of the attitude in which hip hop sprung from. But heres the best thing…he provided a modern blueprint for independant artists, MC’s struggling to get heard, or established underground MCs to gain popularity. He showed people HOW to use to tools that the internet provides to launch a successful carreer from their bedrooms. So if you think Soulja Boy is wack, well then if your favorite underappreciated MC just uses and manipulates the net like Soulja Boy did, and his music is soooo much better, then he should have double or triple the success, RIGHT??
Now, even if some of you say, "well my favorite underappreciated MC isnt gonna kick his carrer of with a dance track", can he make a hit single?? Period. Can he make a popular song? Dont forget Jay, Pac , Big and Nas all had music that had them appreciated in the undergroud and thats where they would have stayed if not for a catchy single. "Aint no Nigga" for Jay, "Get Around" for Pac, "Juicy" for Big and "Ruled the World" for Nas. If he/she can make a good single, Soulja Boy showed them how to take that and use your own hustle and grind to parlay that into something, and he/she is waaay better than Soulja Boy right??? So then Soulja Boys example should serve to revitlize and motivate the underground/underappreciated/unheard scene.
Now personally, I think Soulja boy is wack, but so was alotta other niggas in the 80’s and 90’s which is why the really good ones we all remember stood out so much. I remember watching rap city everyday and thinking how awful most of the shit out was at that time to me (cept a few), when I saw the video of this cat who was really spittin and surprised the hell outta me, I remember thinking, "This Jay-Z dude might actually do something". I admire Soulja boys hustle and what he represents, the little guy in the hood, making beats in his room, tryna get noticed and taking it straight to the streets, the people. Hip Hop made the industry come to it, not the other way around. Thats what hip hop was and should still be about. Everyone has a shot with the internet, you got a song, a video, upload that shit and share it with the world. Get
out in the streets and make people sing your song or do your dance even. You a dope MC but afraid you too lyrical for the young fans, market to the 25’s to 36’s, they got jobs to buy cds and computers to download, find your demographic. Just get up and push yourself, after all, you better than Soulja Boy right???

but then again its much easier to make the kind of music that soldier boy does and blow up cuz he appeals to all the pre-teen girls in middle school than come out with something witty and lyrical over dope beats and be appreciated by the masses. so its not that simple.
any way fuck Soulja Boy but I see your point

Who gives a fuck if he made money? That just proves he sold his soul, so ignorant people can once again degrade the black community.
I especially like this video of five year old’s dancing to “Superman that ho”….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY8nPB8BXh4
SMH get educated….
The industry didnt make people do his dance, they did it because they liked the shit. Make something people will like, then get on the grind.
U don’t think artists know how to market themselves? That’s ignorant.
2. I never said you had to make a dance
3. You have reading comprehension issues
4. No, most musicians dont know how to market themselves, most just want to focus on the music and not the business
5. Youre an idiot
Souljah Boy DID make a LAME dance.
Your argument has no substance…I hope YOU can comprehend that =)
Most themselves are not business people which is why they seldom themselves know how to (or want to) market or promote themselves.
Which is why they aim for a label deal, because they expect the label to do all of the business and marketting for them thus leaving them free to focus on the music.
So no 1 and 4 are not hypocritical, you, as mentioned in 3, have reading comprehension problems. All these words just get jumbled and mixed up in that little head of yours and you dont quite understand whats being said as youve demonstrated with your posts.
Maybe you should read slower, stop, think about what you just read, re-read, then maybe you might just understand whats being said.
Sir, your so fuckin LAME for even hinting that souljah boy saved hip hop…keep listenin to this LAME dude, while I bump AZ in the cut…….
Peace
